To Pursue or To Be- The Happiness Question
Ahh Sunday on a long weekend, or as I like to think of it, the meat in a weekend sandwich!
As it’s Sunday (and the weather’s not all that pleasant) I’m going to take the opportunity to sit back, have a cup of tea and just relax. While I was flicking through my inbox earlier, I came across this quote, sent to me by The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin:
“Now and then it’s good to pause in our pursuit of happiness and just be happy.”
— Guillaume Appollnaire
It stopped me dead in my tracks (well stopped my fingers from clicking on the next email at least). As a lover of all things happiness related, I am constantly reading and thinking about happiness and what we can do to achieve it. And I truly believe all that I have learnt- that we must work at our happiness and nobody but ourselves can make us happy. However, this quote got me thinking- we can’t spend all of our time pursuing happiness, sometimes we just have to be happy!
So today, whether I end up watching a movie on the couch, going out for lunch with my family or running a marathon (unlikely, but you never know..) I’m going to just BE HAPPY when I do it. I’ll go back to pursuing happiness tomorrow 🙂
What do you think? How much time do you spend pursuing happiness, and how much time do you spend just being happy? Or do you think the two are not mutually exclusive- can the pursuit of happiness in fact BE happiness? I’d love to get your feedback! 🙂
