Happiness is Looking Out a Window

Good morning everybody!

I have a question- what did you see when you looked out your window this morning? Did your eyes simply slide over the familiar scene? Or did you notice something beautiful?

I just read a blog by Gretchen Rubin, author of The Happiness Project, in which she suggests that to be happier, all we need to do it look out the window. Sounds simple right? Well, there’s a little more to it than that.

We all know that expressing gratitude is a big part of being happy. But sometimes, in the tumult of everyday life we forget to be grateful for things we see everyday- like our homes. When we look out the window at home, too often we see the familiar sights, but we do not appreciate them. And it is this distinction that could make us happier.

And you don’t need to be looking at an ocean panorama to get the benefits of this advice. Even views that aren’t typically beautiful can offer sights for which we can express gratitude. For Gretchen, the windows from her New York apartment offered views of an ivy-covered building rippling in the breeze, and an exercising neighbour aptly names “Exercise Guy”.

For me, my window looks straight into the branches of a tree. I look out that window every morning and don’t see anything. I think it’s time to start really looking and appreciating what I see 🙂
