Early Rising or Sleeping In- The Happiness Debate
When I was younger, sleeping in was my idea of heaven. I lived quite a long way from my high school, meaning that during the week I would be dragged out of bed at an ungodly hour to get there on time. This weekly torture only strengthened my love of sleeping in, and on Saturdays it was normal for me to sleep well into the afternoon.
I seem to have grown out of that habit (as I think most adults tend to do) and I now get a bit anxious when I sleep in too late. The fear of “wasting the day” niggles away at me, making staying under the covers too late more of a challenge than an enjoyment. For many people, morning is the most peaceful part of the day. Before all the noise and stress of life take hold, you can take a few minutes to yourself and enjoy the serenity- read the newspaper, work on a project, exercise or just sit and be.
Of course, happiness depends on the individual, and waking early is definitely not for everyone! For some people, a sleep-in on the weekend is the most relaxing and revitalising experience in the world.
What do you think? Are you an early riser or a late sleeper? Which makes you happier?
