A Very Happy Turkey
As you probably know, it was recently Thanksgiving in the U.S. I love the idea of Thanksgiving- a holiday that combines expressing gratitude with copious amounts of food? Pretty much my idea of perfection!
I recently read this “interview” by Shari with Tom the Turkey on the Delivering Happiness blog. It offers a fabulous insight into the complex psyche of your everyday Turkey (it’s also a bit of a giggle!)
In a rare interview, a VHB (Very Happy Bird), who has asked to be referred to as “Tom,” sits down with DH to discuss his journey to happiness.
DH: Tell us about your business.
Tom: I work in the field, where I oversee a group of, errr, turkeys. Our job is to stay out of people’s way.
DH: How did you discover Delivering Happiness?
Tom: In my line of work, the amount of time you spend on your feet really takes its toll. I decided to give Zappos a try. Thankfully, they found a pair of shoes that complimented my plumage and gave my eight toes a fighting chance. It was in working with them that I came across the book.
DH: How has the Delivering Happiness Movement changed your life?
Tom: I used to spend a lot of time wandering around, pecking away aimlessly. Let’s face it, being called a turkey, even when you are one, can really gobble you up inside. It was me against the world.
But after reading Delivering Happiness, I decided it was time to pull myself up by the wattle and find a higher purpose. That idea grounded me because I’m literally too fat to fly. In essence, I’ve found others who share a similar passion for the preservation of freedom.
DH: What would you tell others about delivering happiness?
Tom: It’s as easy as spreading your feathers.
DH: What are you thankful for?
Tom: When you’re on the run, you can’t look to the outside world for validation. Happiness must come from within and from the connections you make. I’m so thankful that I get to call fowl every day and engage in teamwork.
DH: What’s currently playing on your iPod?
Tom: Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Free Bird.”
DH: What’s something weird that makes you happy?
Tom: There’s a certain type of bourbon that brings me great pleasure. And any time I see ham on a table, my heart skips a beat.
